It
is with sadness that we acknowledge the passing of
two of our
long serving
patrons this year.
Mr John Davies
Mr John Davies died in July 2003.
John was a great supporter of the New Zealand Masters
Games, especially during its establishment. During
this period he was
a Trustee on the Sports City Trust which organized the New Zealand Masters
Games in Wanganui. John was a great athlete, coach
and administrator who became President
of the NZ Olympic Committee. John is survived by his wife Patsy, to whom we
extend our deepest sympathies.
Mr Arthur Lydiard
Mr Arthur Lydiard died
recently aged 86 whilst on a lecture tour in America.
Mr Lydiard has had a tremendous influence on training techniques since the
1950’s,
their success being testified by the gold medals won by Mr Peter Snell and
Sir Murray Halberg at the 1960 Olympic Games. His techniques were respected
throughout
the world by coaches and athletes in many different sports. Arthur was a legend
and an inspiration to us all. Our deepest sympathies also go to his wife Joelyne,
who competed in athletes at the 2003 NZ Masters Games in Wanganui. |
